Finding silence and intuition as a busy, modern mother in a noisy world

When did the noise from the world get so loud?

It feels like a lifetime ago when I would leave the house empty handed, without my phone in tow, and just be.

Without the constant barrage of social media, news, updates, notifications…

It makes me wonder…

What would life be like without all the chatter?

If we created more opportunities to tune into ourselves?

I originally wrote this piece back at the end of June, but felt called to share with all of you now:

My Dad passed away last week and I find that I've really been craving the silence more than ever. Moving through grief seems like the perfect permission slip to lean into solace, connect inwards and to be present with my surroundings.

I remember having this realization as a mother not so long ago too.

I remember that one day it just clicked that I could choose to stop listening to the noise which told me how to mother.

I could steer clear of the blog posts that would get Harvey to sleep through the night on his own, or the advice from a friend about how she fixed the same problem with her daughter.

But it would have to be a choice that I would need to make over and over.

I would need to create space to go inwards and hear my own motherly instincts and guidance.

This morning I got up early to go for a run down a quiet country road not far from where I live. The spring morning was filled with thick air that told me the rain would be coming soon.

Normally I would put on a podcast, or listen to some inspiring music but I chose to leave my phone at home and wrap myself in the sounds of nature; maybe there I could feel my Dad's presence, or at the very least it was the perfect excuse to go inwards.

In the quiet, I could hear my inner whisper…

The voice that told me to be gentle with myself this week, and that work could wait.

My body, too tired for a run but yearning for a peaceful walk instead.

I began to notice the gentle breeze whistling through the lush green leaves and the birds chirping loudly in the farm fields; the sounds of nature were only broken momentarily by the few short hums of cars passing by.

In that moment, downloads of creativity washed over me - words that inspired this very work.

It was here that I felt connected to something bigger - maybe it was just myself, and maybe it was you too, Dad.

I know that it's not possible to always turn the noise off, and I appreciate the positive side to it all:

Reminders of meetups and events;

Check-ins and connection with family and loved ones;

Learning, information and news that would never have reached me

Efficiency to buy and save and pay bills.

Sometimes I wonder if my voice is adding to all the noise too?

I see the beauty in it too, I do.

I've grown and transformed because of the noise.

I have connected with amazing women that I would have never otherwise formed connections with because of the noise.

But if this stirs something inside you, allow it to be your gentle invitation to find moments of silence in your day to tune into you too.

Here are four ideas that might help you get started with silencing the noise and finding your inner guidance:

  1. Create a designated ‘quiet space’ in your home where you can tune into you.

This could be a cozy corner with some pillows, altar items, essential oils, dim lighting or whatever feels good to you. Creating a physical space signal to our brain that it’s time for introspection and silence.

  2. Create clear boundaries in your day (or week) where you intentionally detox from the digital world.

By disconnecting from social media, news, work, etc., you can create more space to tune into your own thoughts and feelings and actually start become aware of those inner whispers.

  3. Spend time in nature.

Whether it’s going for a hike in the forest, sitting in your backyard listening to the birds chip, or tending to your garden - intentionally spending time in nature helps you to be mindful and present in the moment. This is perfect, because hearing your intuition involves silencing the mind and being with your body in the here and now!

  4. Look into your Human Design authority.

Your authority in Human Design is the way that you were energetically designed to make decisions using your inutuion. By understanding how your intuition communicates with you, you can more easily access your inner guidance in the noisy world.
