Embracing your soulful gifts and expression as a mother.

The Era’s Tour is here in Toronto right now, which means that the city & suburbs are buzzing with everything Taylor Swift.

No, we don't have tickets…but that doesn’t stop Harvey, Ada and I from singing at the top of our lungs when one of her songs comes on in the car!

After one of these karaoke moments the other day, Harvey asked, ‘Mama, how did Taylor Swift become famous?’

I took this question as an opportunity to go deeper with him about following our soul.

I talked about how I believe that Taylor Swift is a naturally gifted songwriter & performer; that she seems inspired to write and sing and dance as a way to creatively express herself using music. With that, she’s inspired many people around the world and it’s led to her fame!

(( I often try to sprinkle little tidbits of personal growth wisdom into our conversation with the hopes that it helps him to follow his own light and joy ))

I could see his wheels turning as I looked back in the rearview mirror.

How do you like to express yourself?” I asked.

I like to colour” he said “and to play hockey.”

Hearing his answers made me smile because these are two things that I have noticed that seem to light up his soul.

I left our conversation that day being reminded about a quote from a book, Broken Open by Elizabeth Lesser, that touched on a similar concept…

“Your soul is always sending messages. If you regularly paint or sing or write poetry or listen to uplifting music, or if you meditate and pray, or if you walk in nature, or move your body in sports or dance, you know what it feels like when you and your soul are in contact. You feel a river moving in you, a joy…. Yet so often, we resist the pull of the river. We tune out the call of the soul. Perhaps we fear what the soul would have to say about choices we have made, habits we have formed, and the decisions we are avoiding. Perhaps if we quieted down and asked the soul for direction, we would be moved to make a big change. Maybe that wild river of energy with its longing for joy and freedom would capsize our more prudent plans, our ambitions, our very survival.”

Does a river move in you, mama?

Do you ask your soul for direction?

How can we lead our children to nurture their soulful expression without tending to our own river?

For me, the work of making my personal river flow has been both a difficult and extremely fulfilling journey; I’m sharing some simple ways to get started with this work today…

  1. Start bringing awareness to your mind’s fears.

Many of us know deep down what moves our soul, but our mind & ego’s fears get in the way to try and keep us safe and comfortable. This is why, the decision to embrace and follow what lights us up often means getting uncomfortable and taking some risks despite the fear being present. Try to bring awareness into the picture….What am I afraid will happen? What ‘worst case’ stories am I telling myself? Are my thoughts distorted or exaggerated? With awareness, we can choose to see our fears as a fleeting thought rather than a truth.

  2. Begin sitting with and releasing your emotions.

Just like the mind, emotional energy can also prevent us from embracing our soul gifts and taking action to express our light. It lives in our body and can surface when we are trying something new or outside of out comfort zone. I have found it extremely helpful to create space for release emotions that are moving through me! I open up to my emotions by sitting in meditation, and I release my emotions through practices such as yoga and breathwork.

  3. Tune into your body’s whispers.

Underneath all of the big emotions and stories lives a helpful little tool — our intuition. It’s our direct connection to our soul. It whispers to us in the quiet moments, and gives us insight about what we truly value, desire and need. Start to tune into and play around with following you intuition! How does it speak to you? When do you hear it most loudly? What happens when you decide to follow you what your intuition tells you?

  4. Begin seeing your creative gifts.

Yes, we are ALL unique and creative gifts! However, sometimes they are harder to see in ourselves than in others. Talking with a friend or a family member can be helpful — what do they see in you as a natural gift or talent? What do they see that makes you happy and ‘lit up’? Another great place to begin explore you gifts is by looking into your Human Design chart and focussing in on your gates and channels. Getting a personalized Human Design Reading can be provide depth and awareness to what your soul came here to share with the world!
